MOTS-C: Research Overview

Abstract molecular illustration representing MOTS-C peptide research

MOTS-c is a 16-amino-acid mitochondrial-derived peptide encoded within mitochondrial DNA, studied for its role in cellular metabolic signaling pathways.

A study published in Cell Metabolism (2015), titled “The mitochondrial-derived peptide MOTS-c promotes metabolic homeostasis and reduces obesity and insulin resistance,” examined MOTS-c in cellular contexts and in mouse models, reporting that the peptide regulated insulin sensitivity and metabolic homeostasis through mechanisms involving the folate cycle, de novo purine biosynthesis, and AMPK activation, and that treatment was associated with prevention of age-dependent and high-fat-diet-induced insulin resistance and diet-induced obesity in the mice studied (Cell Metabolism00061-3); PubMed).
