Cardiogen: Research Overview
Cardiogen (Ala-Glu-Asp-Arg, also referenced by CAS number 857267-11-9) is a synthetic tetrapeptide bioregulator studied in relation to cardiomyocyte proliferation and apoptosis in cardiac tissue culture models.
An animal study using organotypic myocardial tissue cultures from young (3-month-old) and aged (24-month-old) rats examined the effects of 20 individual amino acids and the synthetic tetrapeptide cardiogen, each at a concentration of 10⁻¹² M, on cell proliferation and apoptosis. Cardiogen strongly stimulated proliferation in tissue from both age groups, outperforming the amino acids tested individually, and immunohistochemistry showed a reduction in p53 protein expression, suggesting inhibition of apoptosis in the myocardial tissue (PubMed).
