KP-31: Research Overview
KP-31 is a laboratory research designation for a synthetic mitochondria-targeted tetrapeptide compound class studied for its interactions with inner-mitochondrial-membrane phospholipid components in cellular and animal models.
A 2022 review in Oxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity examined this mitochondria-targeting peptide class, summarizing pharmacokinetic and safety data alongside proposed mechanisms of action drawn from animal models, renal cell models, and a phase IIa human clinical study involving atherosclerotic renal artery stenosis; across these models, the compound class was reported to interact with mitochondrial membrane components under the conditions studied (PMC).
A study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (2020) examined the mitochondrial protein interaction landscape of this peptide class using chemical cross-linking mass spectrometry in isolated mitochondria from aged mouse hearts, together with complementary mitochondrial functional assays in young and aged mice; the analysis identified numerous cross-linked peptide pairs and associated functional changes in the mitochondrial preparations studied (PNAS).
